When it comes to Gum Disease, also commonly referred to as Periodontal Disease, it can become a serious problem if it’s ignored or worse, left untreated. Gum disease is also a major cause of tooth loss in adults and though it may not necessarily feel like you have it, it can still very well be present!
The main cause of gum disease is usually because of plaque buildup (the sticky film that constantly adheres to our teeth). As plaque hardens more and more, it turns into tartar and an infection is likely to happen. Sometimes a mild form of gum disease can occur which is referred to as gingivitis. Luckily, gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and can usually be reversed with consistent brushing, flossing, and regular dental cleanings.
There are also several factors that can put you more at risk for developing gum disease
If you suspect that you have gum disease or any of the aforementioned symptoms, be sure to alert Dr. Cocolis and seek an appointment. If you’re catching gum disease in its early stages (gingivitis), you can still reverse it with consistent brushing, flossing, and a professional dental cleaning. However, if early symptoms are neglected to be taken care of, the disease can advance to a more severe stage called periodontitis. Periodontitis is the destructive form of periodontal disease and affects 47.2% of adults over the age of 30 in the United States
Chronic periodontitis can lead to the loss of tissue and bone that support the teeth which by proxy, can lead to tooth loss. This is the most common form of periodontitis amongst adults, but it can also occur at any age. Though the symptoms can be gradual, they may also have periods of quick progression.
For those who may suffer from chronic periodontitis, the symptoms are fairly obvious to spot such as the rapid loss of tissue and bone in different areas of the mouth. Symptoms may even also be nonexistent, giving the patient no warning signs of the disease which is why regular dental checkups are important. Dr. Cocolis will examine your mouth to ensure that you don’t have any of these symptoms happening. If you are in the midst of developing symptoms such as having the plaque hardening to tartar, a dentist will be the only one able to remove it. This is why it is always encouraged and important to practice preventive dental care methods at home.
